Braddock General HospitalDuring October 1894, newspapers reported that a local businessman had committed $200 towards the establishment of a hospital. Shortly afterward, other business owners offered additional subscriptions. By February 1905, sufficient funds had been gathered to allow for the chartering of Braddock General Hospital.
The organizing group was called the Braddock Hospital Association. They negotiated the purchase of the Isaac Mills homestead along Braddock Avenue, including the family’s mansion in which the first hospital was situated. Braddock General Hospital opened its doors on June 27th, 1906.
In 1911, the new 70-bed "West Wing" was completed and Mills Mansion was converted to accommodate student nurses and hospital administration. In 1913 hospital managers again found that they were out of space and funds for yet another hospital expansion were solicited. On April 19, 1917 a new 60-bed “East Wing” was opened.
In 1940, Mills Mansion was demolished to make room for the addition of a new building connecting the East and West Wings. The connecting corridor, called the Frick Corridor, was completed in 1941. Upon completion of the new wing, the hospital was able to boast 147 beds.
In October 1973, a $10 million, 150,000 square foot addition was opened. The facility doubled the amount of space in the hospital and included many upgraded departments, including acute, critical care and pediatric care units, semi-private patient rooms, and many new staff and visitor amenities. In total, another 138 new beds were added to the existing 87 that were previously available in the older South Wing. For over 100 years, the hospital has continued to serve the community well. Countless numbers of dedicated and well-trained physicians, nurses and employees have supported its work. Some of them are pictured here.
